The 18th Australian Music Prize finalists were announced this week. They include albums by Sampa The Great and Julia Jacklin. King Stingray, Tasman Keith, and King Stingray.
Longplays by 1300 and Body Type, Camp Cope and Laura Jean are also included in the hunt.
Soundmerch, major sponsor, will present the ultimate winner with a bounty of A$30,000 ($21,000).
The result is not affected by sales or chart positions. It’s the artistry of the entry that counts.
“Yet again we have a very strong list,” comments AMP founder and prize director Scott B. Murphy. “It’s incredibly diverse and truly captures another year of the world’s best music. I sincerely thank the Soundmerch AMP team of judges – their donation of time and passion is much greater than what most people would think.”
Sampa The Great has formed with the AMP.
The prestigious 2017 prize for the mixtape was won by the Melbourne-based, Zambian-born, Botswana raised hip-hop artist. Birds and The BEE9And again in 2020 The ReturnTo become the only artist to win this prestigious award twice. Sampa was also a world-first when she was named the first ever BET Amplified global artists in 2020.

The nine recordings that were shortlisted are selected from a longlist 490 eligible Australian albums, which were all individually reviewed by music experts.
Island, Virgin, and EMI are all supporting the shortlist. They each contribute A$3,000 ($2,100), which will be used to fund a funding pool from which the artists shortlisted can draw to enable them to attend the winner announcement.
